Mercedes have played down, without completely dismissing, media speculation that seven times Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher could come out of retirement as Jenson Button's replacement. "It's clear that there will always be speculation as long as one cockpit is still free," said a spokesman for the German car maker, who have taken over world champions Brawn, on Saturday. "And some speculations are nothing but dreams which will not come true."

Construction companies are being asked to cut their fees by up to half as developers take advantage of increased competition for orders amid a work drought. The overall cost of building has fallen by about 35 per cent in Dubai and 20 per cent in Abu Dhabi from a peak in the third quarter of last year, figures from the construction consultancy EC Harris show. The decline has prompted developers to lock contractors into longer-term deals for lower fees.

It was reported that Mercedes are in secret talks with the former F1 great for some time. It was learnt that team principal Ross Brawn dished out a proposal to Schumacher in Abu Dhabi three weeks ago.

A luxury sports car maker based in the Netherlands has announced it is moving an assembly plant to Coventry. Spyker Cars makes up to 50 luxury cars a year, mainly for the US market, with prices starting from about £180,000. It said up to 45 out of 135 jobs would be at risk when it moved its assembly plant from Zeewolde in Holland to Whitley in Coventry by the end of 2009.

Russia lacks a viable program for developing a new spacecraft and risks losing its place as a leader in space travel, a veteran Russian cosmonaut said in an interview published Friday. Efforts to build a successor to the 40-year old Soyuz spacecraft have dragged on with no end in sight, Mikhail Tyurin told the Novaya Gazeta newspaper. Tyurin, a veteran of two missions to the International Space Station in 2001 and 2007, blamed the slow progress on a lack of clear goals and poor coordination.

The motor racing star has put in an offer of £6 million for the 18th century pile in Wiltshire, The Sun claims. Williams bought the house for almost £8.5 million a year ago, but is apparently ready to accept a £1 million loss on the property.

Kiwi Formula One test driver Brendon Hartley returns to Macau for one of only two races, the other being the New Zealand Grand Prix, allowed to be call a grand prix outside of Formula One. Last year Hartley set the track on fire scorching from 20th on the grid in the feature race to finish third. Kiwi Formula Ford driver Mitch Evans has become at 15 the youngest to test drive an Australian V8 Supercar.
